Stephansdom on Stephansplatz is the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the principal symbol of the city. The Gothic cathedral was built between 1147 and 1469, and its present silhouette — with the 137-metre Südturm (the South Tower, known as Steffl), the Pummerin (the largest bell in Austria at 20,130 kg) and the colourful roof of 230,000 ceramic tiles — remains the most recognisable image of Vienna.
The cathedral holds up to 25,000 worshippers for major state ceremonies, and 343 steps lead to the Südturm viewing platform with a panorama of Vienna. Stephansdom has been the site of coronations, imperial weddings and Habsburg funerals (the crypt holds 72 sarcophagi), as well as a venue for organ concerts on the largest organ in Austria (the 10,200-pipe Riesenorgel). For a passenger landing at Schwechat, what counts is access to the Stephansplatz pedestrian area and a clear understanding of traffic restrictions in Innere Stadt.
The ride from Vienna Airport to Stephansdom covers about 19 km and usually takes 25-40 minutes. The route typically follows the A4 motorway towards Vienna, then either the A23 urban motorway or a direct exit to Landstraßer Hauptstraße, with the final approach along the Ringstraße. Stephansplatz is a pedestrian zone, accessible to vehicles only via Rotenturmstraße, Singerstraße, Kärntner Straße (side accesses) and Schulerstraße. A short stop right beside the cathedral is discreet but cannot be made on the square itself — guests are dropped at the nearest junction with the pedestrian zone.
After landing, your chauffeur meets you in Terminal 3 arrivals with a name board, assists with luggage and drives directly to the nearest car-accessible point. The cathedral entrances are: Riesentor (the Giant Door, the western main entrance) on Stephansplatz for tourists, with Singertor and Bischofstor as side entrances.
