The Hofburg on Michaelerplatz is the former winter residence of the Habsburg dynasty and a symbol of the Austrian monarchy. Developed between the 13th and 19th centuries, the complex covers 240,000 square metres in the heart of Innere Stadt.
Today it houses the official residence of the Austrian Federal President, the Sisi Museum with the Empress Elisabeth apartments, the Schatzkammer with the imperial treasury and the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, the Spanische Hofreitschule (Spanish Riding School) in continuous operation since 1572, and the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle.
For a passenger landing at Schwechat, what counts is not only the ride itself but also a clear understanding of the many entrances — Michaelerkuppel, In der Burg, Heldenplatz — and of the restricted traffic zone in the 1st district.
The ride from Vienna Airport to the Hofburg covers about 20 km and usually takes 25-40 minutes. The route typically follows the A4 motorway towards Vienna, then either the A23 urban motorway or a direct exit to Landstraßer Hauptstraße, with the final approach along the Ringstraße. The closing section near Michaelerplatz requires live judgement, because Innere Stadt inside the Ringstraße is a restricted traffic zone, and in the high tourist season the area around the Hofburg, Michaelerplatz and Kohlmarkt is busy with horse-drawn fiakers, pedestrians and coach groups.

After landing, your chauffeur meets you in Terminal 3 arrivals with a name board, assists with luggage and drives directly to the agreed entrance. The Hofburg has several entrances depending on the purpose of the visit: Michaelerkuppel for the Imperial Apartments and the Sisi Museum, In der Burg for the Schatzkammer, Heldenplatz for the Neue Burg and the Spanish Riding School performances.
If you have booked a Sisi Museum visit, a Galaperformance at the Spanische Hofreitschule or a Wiener Hofmusikkapelle concert, we align the drop-off with the correct gate. For official guests visiting the Presidential residence, we plan the approach in accordance with the protocol in place.
We also handle return transfers after the visit, rides between the Hofburg and Innere Stadt hotels (Hotel Sacher, Park Hyatt, Bristol) and onward routes to Schönbrunn or Belvedere as part of a cultural day. A transfer to the Hofburg works well for premium leisure guests exploring imperial Vienna, honeymoon couples, corporate organisers using the Neue Burg as a venue, and diplomatic visitors.
It should be predictable, discreet and aligned with the operating logic of a site that combines museum, state residence, concert stage and riding school.
