The Spanische Hofreitschule at Michaelerplatz 1 is the oldest continuously operating riding school in the world, founded in 1572 at the Habsburg court. Since 2010, the classical art of horsemanship practised by the Spanische Hofreitschule has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list — the only surviving Renaissance classical riding tradition preserved in unchanged form.
Training of the Lipizzaner stallions — the white horses of the Lipizzan breed, bred from the 16th century at the imperial stud at Lipica (today in Slovenia) — takes place in the Winterreitschule, a baroque hall designed by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach and inaugurated in 1735.
The hall measures 55 m in length and 18 m in width, the ceiling is supported by 46 white columns with stucco decoration, and the central arched ceiling features a portrait of Emperor Charles VI on horseback. The Gala Performance lasts about 80 minutes and includes six classical figures: Pas de Deux, School Quadrille, Pas de Trois and the most demanding "Airs above the Ground" (Levade, Capriole, Courbette). For a passenger landing at Schwechat, what counts is a punctual arrival at the Winterreitschule entrance and proper coordination with the ticketed show time.
The ride from Vienna Airport to the Spanische Hofreitschule covers about 20 km and usually takes 25-40 minutes. The route typically follows the A4 motorway towards Vienna, then either the A23 urban motorway or a direct exit to Landstraßer Hauptstraße, with the final approach along the Ringstraße. Michaelerplatz sits at the heart of the Innere Stadt restricted traffic zone — a short kerbside stop on the square is discreet but must account for the presence of horse-drawn fiakers, pedestrians and tourist traffic.

After landing, your chauffeur meets you in Terminal 3 arrivals with a name board, assists with luggage and drives directly to the Spanische Hofreitschule entrance on Michaelerplatz 1. Audience entrances for the Gala Performance lead via side staircases to the Winterreitschule balconies, while VIP guests in the representative boxes use the main staircase next to the Stallburg stables.
For passengers booking a Morgenarbeit (morning training open Tuesday to Friday, 10:00-12:00) a standard drop-off is sufficient. For the evening Gala Performance (Saturday evening) we plan arrival with an appropriate buffer, as the audience arrives in one wave.
We also handle return transfers after the show, rides between the Spanische Hofreitschule and Innere Stadt hotels (Hotel Sacher, Park Hyatt) and onward routes to Schönbrunn or the Belvedere as part of a cultural day focused on Habsburg heritage.
A transfer to the Spanische Hofreitschule works well for equestrian enthusiasts, premium guests exploring cultural Vienna, honeymoon couples and families with children — for whom the white Lipizzaner performance is one of the most memorable Viennese attractions.
