Which border crossing do you use and how long does clearance take?
Medyka–Shehyni by default: 14 km from central Przemyśl, exactly on the DK28 → M11 axis, open around the clock. Clearance on both sides usually runs 1.5–3 h; queues are shortest between 06:00 and 11:00 and overnight, longest on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, and the shift changes around 08:00 and 20:00 are worth avoiding. Your chauffeur checks the Polish Border Guard waiting times published on granica.gov.pl before the approach. If Medyka builds up we have two diversions: Malhowice–Nyzhankovychi, opened in December 2024 and still lightly used, and Korczowa–Krakovets — DK77 through Radymno, the A4, then the M10 through Yavoriv, about 128 km but almost entirely dual carriageway, so the total time is often similar.
How long does the whole journey take and when should we leave?
Driving alone is just under two hours: 14 km from Przemyśl to Medyka and 76.9 km on the M11 through Mostyska, Sudova Vyshnia and the Horodok bypass. With clearance added we plan 3.5–5 h from pickup to your Lviv address. An early start is best — you cross in the shortest queue and reach Lviv before midday with a full working day ahead. A night departure is the second good option, when traffic at the crossing is minimal. We fix the hour at booking and confirm it on the day of travel, after checking live queue data. If your flight into Rzeszów-Jasionka or your train to Przemyśl runs late, the chauffeur waits and we move the start.
Can you fly to Lviv?
No. Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civil aviation since February 2022, and Lviv-Danylo Halytskyi Airport, although undamaged, handles no passenger traffic; talks on resuming flights continue, but no date has been announced. Lviv is reachable only overland. The nearest operating airports on the Polish side are Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE) and Lublin (LUZ), while Przemyśl is the last Polish city with a mainline railway station and a road border crossing within about fifteen kilometres — which is why this leg has become the final stage of the journey for most travellers heading to Lviv.
The train from Przemyśl is faster — when does a transfer make more sense?
PKP Intercity and Ukrzaliznytsia trains cover the route in roughly 2.5 h with border formalities handled on board, and they win if you travel with cabin luggage, fit the timetable and finish in central Lviv. A transfer takes over when any of that breaks down: seats sold out or departure times that do not work, several suitcases, equipment or a pushchair, travel with children or an older relative, a group of four or more, and above all a destination outside the centre. An ordinary Przemyśl taxi will not cross into Ukraine — we leave at the hour you choose and finish at the door, with no luggage change at Lviv-Holovnyi station.
What documents do I need and is the journey safe?
Ukraine sits outside the Schengen Area: a passport valid for the whole stay is required, an EU national ID card is not accepted, and EU citizens travel visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day period. Vehicle paperwork and insurance with territorial cover for Ukraine, including the Green Card, are on us. The country is at war and under martial law, with a night curfew in the Lviv region — we plan arrival before it begins, and we recommend checking your own foreign ministry advisory before you travel. We do not promise safety nobody can guarantee today: we agree the plan, stay in contact with the chauffeur throughout, and do not serve routes east of Lviv.
