About this route
Route overview
Mlawa is a historic border town of western Masuria, pivotal in the 1939 defensive war — here, at the Mlawa defensive position (8 km north of the town), the 20th Infantry Division of the Polish Army fought hard battles against the German 3rd Army from 1 to 4 September 1939. The Mlawa Bunkers are a preserved complex of reinforced-concrete combat shelters from 1939 with a monument to the heroism of Polish soldiers. The Zawkrze Region Museum in town presents the folk culture of western Masuria, the regional history and an exhibition of defensive-war memorabilia. Mlawa was also a historical base of the 1st Brigade of Jozef Pilsudski's Legions — the town's Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa keeps Legion memorabilia. 130 km via the S7 to Mlawa, 1 h 45 min - 2 h off-peak. The service runs 24/7. A standard plan: 9:00 hotel pickup, 11:00 Mlawa, a tour of the bunkers and museum (3 h), lunch and a 15:00 return to Warsaw. From EUR 450 in a Mercedes E-Class for 1-3 passengers, EUR 550 in a V-Class for 4-6.
