About this route
Route overview
Birmingham is the United Kingdom's second largest city and the economic heart of the Midlands — home to Jaguar Land Rover (Solihull, Coventry, Gaydon), the NEC (National Exhibition Centre), the ICC, the BIC and Genting Arena. From Gatwick the route runs up the M23, then around the western M25 and onto the M40/M42 into Birmingham — 220-240 km, 170-220 min depending on time of day. That is about 40 min longer than from Heathrow (130-175 min) because LGW sits south of London. Premium city hotels include Hyatt Regency Birmingham, The Grand Hotel Birmingham (Autograph Collection), Hotel Indigo and Park Regis. The NEC has its own slip road off the M42 J6, alongside Birmingham Airport — a convenient exit for trade fairs and conferences. Birmingham is also becoming the second hub of high-speed rail (HS2), and the JLR campuses around Solihull are served door-to-door without a change of vehicle. The driver pulls up to the North or South Terminal according to your flight number and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board.
