About this route
Route overview
A calm half-day escape from central Krakow to the bend of the Vistula and the Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec — one of the oldest monasteries in Poland (founded in 1044), built on a limestone cliff 40 metres above the river. The standard itinerary: 9:00 hotel or KRK airport pickup, 9:30 arrival in Tyniec (18 km along Tyniecka Street and the Vistula, parking below the abbey walls), 9:45 entry to the courtyard, the Romanesque Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (11th-18th centuries, Baroque rebuild), the abbots' crypt, the Abbey Museum exhibition on the Rule of Saint Benedict and the ora et labora rhythm, the viewing terrace above the Vistula, 11:15 visit to the monastic shop (Benedictine sourdough bread, honey, Tyniec beer, herbal liqueurs), 12:00 lunch at "Pod Filarami" restaurant inside the abbey or at Tyniec Village inn (pumpkin soup, pierogi, Benedictine roast), 13:30 drive back, 14:00 hotel. Four to five hours door-to-door, gentle pace, no rush. The chauffeur waits at the parking lot, helps with the steps to the basilica (a few dozen stone steps; for guests with limited mobility we recommend the side ramp). Tyniec is a good counterpoint after an intense day at Auschwitz or Wieliczka — a contemplative atmosphere, Gregorian vespers at 17:30 if the plan is extended. From EUR 220 in a Mercedes E-Class for 1-3 passengers, from EUR 280 in a V-Class for 4-6 passengers. Fixed price at booking.
