About this route
Route overview
Czorsztyn is the gateway to the Pieniny range — the ruins of a medieval castle crown a headland above Czorsztyn Lake and are often called the most beautiful castle ruin in Poland. Opposite stands the fully preserved Dunajec Castle in Niedzica, with a passenger ferry running between the two. Czorsztyn Lake was created in 1997 when the Dunajec valley was flooded by the Czorsztyn-Sromowce dam — today it serves sailing, kayaking and panoramic photography. Czorsztyn is also the trailhead for the blue route up the Three Crowns (982 m, 2 h one way, the most famous summit of the Pieniny). 150 km via the Zakopianka S7 to Nowy Targ, then DK49 to Czorsztyn — 2 h 15 min - 2 h 30 min off-peak. The best season runs May to October (ferries active, trails dry). The service runs 24/7. The driver pulls up at the KRK terminal with a name board and delivers you to the lower ruin car park or to Pensjonat Czorsztyn by the lake. A classic plan: KRK 7:00, ruins and panorama photography 9:30-11:00, ferry to Niedzica, lunch, Three Crowns ascent or return to Krakow.
