About this route
Route overview
Haczow in Subcarpathia holds the largest Gothic wooden church in Europe — the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Michael Archangel, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003. The shrine was raised in the 14th-15th centuries from larch and fir, 47 m long and 17 m high, with its log structure, soboty galleries and post-and-frame tower preserved intact. The interior is lined with a 1494 wall painting cycle — the oldest figurative painted programme surviving in Polish wooden sacred architecture, including a Christological narrative, the Passion and the Last Judgement. A Gothic Pieta of around 1400 in the high altar, a 15th-century crucifix and Baroque side altars form the core of the furnishings. 200 km via the A4 motorway to Rzeszow, then DK19 and DW887 to Haczow — 2 h 45 min - 3 h off-peak. During the 7-9 and 16-19 peaks the Rzeszow ring adds 20-30 min. The service operates 24/7. The driver pulls up at the KRK terminal with a name board and delivers you to the parish gate next to the church.
