About this route
Route overview
The Church of Saint Michael Archangel in Debno Podhalanskie is the best preserved Gothic wooden church in Poland — inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003. The log structure was raised in the late 15th century, and in 1500 its interior was covered with stencilled wall paintings that have never been restored, forming the oldest complete medieval painted programme on timber in Central Europe. 33 biblical scenes, floral ornaments, a Gothic triptych altar from the 15th century and an original crucifix make the interior striking even for seasoned connoisseurs of sacred art. 90 km via the A4 motorway to the Rdzawka junction, then the S7 Zakopianka to Nowy Targ and a local road to Debno — 1 h 30 min off-peak. During winter half-term weekends and the July-August peaks the Zakopianka adds 30-45 min around Myslenice and Lubien. The service operates 24/7. The driver pulls up at the KRK terminal with a name board and delivers you to the parish gate in Debno. We typically combine Debno with onward transfer to Zakopane or a return via Nowy Sacz and Stary Sacz.
