About this route
Route overview
Frombork is the town of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) — Poland's most famous astronomer, author of De revolutionibus orbium coelestium and creator of the heliocentric theory. Copernicus spent most of his life here as a canon of the Warmia chapter, conducted astronomical observations from a tower by the cathedral and is buried here — his grave was confirmed by DNA in 2010 and he was re-interred in the basilica. The Archcathedral Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built from 1342, is a Gothic brick church with an organ from 1683 (Daniel Nitrowski, around 2,700 pipes, in-season organ concerts) and the Polish Chapel with the astronomer's tomb. Cathedral Hill — medieval fortifications, the Copernicus Tower and the Radziejowski Tower (viewing platform over the Vistula Lagoon). The Nicolaus Copernicus Museum in the former bishop's palace — astronomical instruments, manuscripts and a planetarium. 90 km via the S7 to Elblag, then DK22 to Frombork, 1 h 30 min - 1 h 45 min off-peak. The service runs 24/7.
