About this route
Route overview
Grudziadz has the most distinctive skyline along the Vistula — a complex of 28 medieval granaries built between the 14th and 18th centuries as the western wall of the Old Town, today the longest continuous line of medieval granaries preserved in Europe. The granaries formed a defensive frontage to the river and at the same time grain stores for Hanseatic trade. The Gothic brick Basilica of St Nicholas from the 14th c. holds Renaissance tombs and Baroque furnishings. Grudziadz Fortress — an 18th-19th century Prussian fortification on Castle Hill, one of the largest fortification systems preserved in Poland, today partly opened to visitors (underground galleries, casemates). The Citadel over the Vistula and the Klimek Tower (a remnant of the Teutonic castle, viewing platform). The summer season opens river tourist cruises — Grudziadz is the starting point for a popular 50-km Vistula kayak trip to Torun. 130 km via the A1 to Swiecie, then DK91 to Grudziadz, 1 h 45 min - 2 h off-peak.
