About this route
Route overview
Kwidzyn is the second best-preserved Teutonic castle in Poland after Malbork — the seat of the historic Pomesanian bishopric and the cathedral chapter of the Teutonic Order. The castle-cathedral complex from the 14th c. (on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2018) is unique in Europe: the conventual castle and the chapter cathedral form one volume with the gdanisko (the characteristic sanitary tower on wooden arcades over the moat — the best-preserved example in the former Teutonic state). The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist holds the tombs of three Teutonic grand masters (Werner von Orseln, Ludolf Konig, Heinrich von Plauen) — rediscovered in 2007 after centuries of oblivion. The Kwidzyn Castle Museum presents the archaeological and ethnographic collection of the Powisle region. 100 km via the A1 to Tczew, then DK91 and DK90 to Kwidzyn, 1 h 30 min - 1 h 45 min off-peak. The service runs 24/7. A standard plan: 9:00 hotel pickup, 10:45 Kwidzyn, tour of the castle, cathedral and gdanisko (2.5 h), lunch at Wenecja restaurant on the Liwa river, 14:00 walk through the Old Town and the Grudziadz Gate tower, 16:00 return to Gdansk.
