About this route
Route overview
Zell am See-Kaprun is one of the most complete year-round resorts in the Austrian Alps — set on the turquoise Zeller See (4.7 km long, 68 m deep) at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe massif (2000 m). The regions trump card is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (3203 m above sea level) — the only ski glacier in Salzburg state, reached by a gondola from Kaprun, open from October to June, with the Top of Salzburg platform at 3029 m and the National Park Gallery tunnel offering views of 30 High Tauern three-thousanders. In summer the area offers swimming in Zeller See (officially the cleanest water in Austria), sailing, e-bikes around the lake (28 km loop), the 27-hole Golfclub Zell am See-Kaprun and the Tauern Spa Kaprun (16 pools, 12 saunas). Hotel Salzburgerhof 5* Relais & Chateaux on the lakeshore (Schlossstrasse 4) is an icon of family hospitality run by the Stockinger family since 1898 — 90 rooms, two Michelin stars at the Mayer's restaurant, classic Austrian spa. 410 km via the A1 motorway to Salzburg, then the A10 Tauern Autobahn with two tunnels (Tauern and Katschberg, toll required) and the B311 to Zell, 4 h 30 min. The service runs 24/7, flight tracking from VIE, winter tyres from November, snow chains on board. A Mercedes V-Class is ideal for ski luggage with families of 4-6. From EUR 1300 in a Mercedes E-Class one-way for 1-3 passengers, from EUR 1550 in a V-Class for 4-6 (winter and holiday surcharge applies).
