About this route
Route overview
St Anton am Arlberg is the historical birthplace of modern alpine skiing — a village (2500 inhabitants) on the Tirol-Vorarlberg border at 1304 m, where in 1901 Hannes Schneider founded the worlds first ski school and developed the Arlberg-Technik (parallel turns with body balance) still used worldwide. The Ski Club Arlberg was founded on 3 January 1901 — the oldest ski club in the Alps. The Ski Arlberg area (linked in 2016 with Lech-Zürs and Stuben by new gondolas) is the largest ski region in Austria: 305 km of slopes, 87 lifts, an altitude range of 1300-2811 m (Valluga), December-April season. Après-ski legends: MooserWirt on the home run (open from 14:00, the bar that ruined more careers than alcohol) with DJs and dancing in ski boots, Krazy Kanguruh (since 1965, founded by Australians), Heustadl and Underground. Hotels: Hotel Arlberg (Dorfstrasse 23, the Tschol family since 1959, 5*), Hospiz Alm (St. Christoph, an inn from 1386 founded by the shepherd Heinrich Findelkind for pilgrims and the oldest hospitality order in the Alps), Hotel Schwarzer Adler and Anthonys Life&Style Hotel. Restaurants: Hospiz Alm (premium Tirolean cuisine, famous wine cellar), Verwallstube on Galzig and Rendl Restaurant. 580 km via the A1, A12 and S16 motorways through the Arlberg tunnel (toll required) or via the Arlberg Pass (closed in winter), 5 h 45 min. The service runs 24/7, flight tracking from VIE, winter tyres from November, snow chains on board. From EUR 1650 in a Mercedes E-Class one-way for 1-3 passengers, from EUR 1950 in a V-Class for 4-6 (winter and New Year surcharge applies).
