About this route
Route overview
Bregenz is the capital of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg (29 000 inhabitants) on the eastern shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee, 536 km2, the AT/DE/CH tri-border), at the foot of the Pfänder mountain (1064 m, reached by the Pfänderbahn cable car with views of 240 Alpine summits and three countries). The citys most recognisable icon is the Bregenzer Festspiele (since 1946) with the worlds most famous floating opera stage (Seebühne) built on piles 25 m off the shore — every two years a new monumental opera staging (Aida 2009, Tosca 2007 and 2019 with the Bond 007 Quantum of Solace scene, Madama Butterfly 2022, Der Freischütz 2024), 7000 seats, the July-August season. The indoor Festspielhaus hosts chamber operas and concerts (Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg). Sights: the historic Oberstadt with the Martinsturm tower (1601), the Vorarlberg Museum with its modernist Cukrowicz facade from 2013, Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB, Peter Zumthor 1997 — Pritzker Prize) and the 4 km lake promenade. Hotels: Hotel Schwärzler 4* (Landstrasse 9, the Schwärzler family), Hotel Mercure Bregenz City and Hotel Weisses Kreuz. Bregenz is also the gateway to Liechtenstein (Vaduz 50 km, 45 min — the transfer can continue) and Switzerland (St. Gallen 40 km). 660 km via the A1, A12 and S16 motorways through the Arlberg tunnel, then the A14 Rheintal Autobahn to Bregenz, 6 h 30 min.
