About this route
Route overview
Ljubljana is the compact capital of Slovenia (295,000 inhabitants) on the Ljubljanica river at the foot of the Julian Alps — a Baroque and Art Nouveau city shaped by the genius of architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957), who after the First World War designed its new urban identity (a student of Otto Wagner in Vienna and author of the Prague Castle renewal under President Masaryk). Plečniks signature works: the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje, 1932 — a 1842 Baroque bridge expanded by Plečnik with two side footbridges, the most famous symbol of the city), the National and University Library NUK from 1941 (a dark stairway leading up to a bright reading room — a metaphor for the journey from ignorance to knowledge), the Central Market (Plečnikove Tržnice, 1944 — a Neoclassical riverside colonnade) and the Žale cemetery. Ljubljana Castle (12th century) on a 366 m hill above the city, reached by funicular since 2006 — the watchtower, the Virtual Museum of Ljubljana and the Strelec restaurant. Mestni trg (Town Square) with the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers by Francesco Robba (1751), the Baroque Cathedral of St Nicholas, Trg francoske revolucije with the Napoleon column (Ljubljana was capital of the Illyrian Provinces 1809-1813). Tivoli Park (5 sq km — a landscape park designed by Plečnik with the Jakopič Promenade). The Postojna cave (50 km from Ljubljana — 24 km of limestone galleries explored by electric train, one of the longest karst caves in Europe) and Bled (55 km — an Alpine lake with an island and Pletna boats). 380 km via the A2 and A1 motorways through Maribor and Celje, 4 h. The service runs 24/7. From EUR 1050 in a Mercedes E-Class for 1-3 passengers, from EUR 1300 in a V-Class for 4-6.
