Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2021 as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe serial heritage (11 spa towns in 7 countries) — the most famous Czech spa town, founded in 1370 by Emperor Charles IV, who is said to have discovered the hot springs in the Teplá valley during a hunt. 13 main thermal springs at 30-72 degrees C and 6 g/l mineralisation, drunk from traditional porcelain cups with a spout (lazaneček), flow through the town colonnades: Mlýnská kolonáda (Mill Colonnade 1881, Neo-Renaissance by Josef Zítek — architect of the National Theatre in Prague), Vřídelní kolonáda over the Vřídlo geyser (72 degrees C, jetting up to 12 m), Tržní kolonáda 1883 (timber Neo-Swiss) and Sadová kolonáda. Grandhotel Pupp from 1701 — the most famous hotel in the town, a film location for Casino Royale 2006 (James Bond with Daniel Craig) and Last Holiday 2006 — hosting Habsburg emperors, Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Karl Marx and Atatürk. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (founded 1946 — the oldest film festival in Central Europe, July, category A alongside Cannes and Venice). Becherovka — a herbal liqueur from 1807 (38 percent, 32 herbs and spices), museum and tasting at the distillery, officially called the 13th spring of Karlovy Vary. 400 km via the A4 and A1 motorways through Prague and the D6, 4 h 30 min.
