About this route
Route overview
Eisenstadt is the capital of Burgenland (14,000 inhabitants) — the youngest of Austrias federal states (Burgenland joined Austria only in 1921 after the First World War), on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl which together with its surroundings was inscribed in 2001 on the UNESCO list as the Fertő-Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape (a cross-border Austro-Hungarian heritage). The heart of the city is Schloss Esterházy — the Baroque residence of the Esterházy family (princes of Eisenstadt since 1622), one of the finest aristocratic residences in Austria (118 rooms, frescoed ceilings, state halls). Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court for 30 years (1761-1790), composing for Prince Nicholas the Magnificent around 100 symphonies, 60 piano sonatas and 40 string quartets — most of the composers masterpieces were written in Eisenstadt. The Haydn-Saal in the palace — one of the finest concert halls in Europe acoustically (regular Haydn-Festspiele concerts in September). The Haydn-Haus — the family home from 1766-1778, today a museum with original instruments. The Bergkirche Eisenstadt with Haydns tomb (1809) — the composers mausoleum after the remains were transferred from Vienna in 1932. The Schloßpark Esterházy with an artificial lake and the Leopoldinentempel. 60 km via the A2 and A3 (Burgenland Schnellstraße) to Eisenstadt, 50 min - 1 h. The service runs 24/7.
