About this route
Route overview
Klosterneuburg is a small town north of Vienna (27,000 inhabitants) on the Danube, dominated by the monumental Stift Klosterneuburg — an Augustinian abbey (Augustinian Canons Regular) founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III of Babenberg (saint, patron of Austria), one of Austrias oldest and wealthiest monasteries and one of Europes oldest continuously operating wineries (Stift Klosterneuburg has 108 ha of vineyards and has produced 1 million bottles a year for 900 years — the countrys oldest wine brand). The Verduner Altar (1181) — a medieval altarpiece of 51 enamelled panels showing biblical scenes, one of the masterpieces of medieval art in Europe, the work of Nicholas of Verdun. A Romanesque-Gothic Stiftskirche with a Baroque dome (two towers), the medieval Kreuzgang cloister, the Kaiserzimmer (Imperial Apartments of Charles VI with plans to make Klosterneuburg the Austrian Escorial 1730), the Stiftsmuseum with Gothic paintings. Mittelaltergasse — a medieval lane with houses from the 14th-15th century. A Cellar Tour of the monastery cellars — tastings of the abbey wines from Bisamberg and Kahlenberg vineyards (Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sankt Laurent). The St Leopold tradition on 15 November — Fasselrutschen, "sliding off the barrel" of a 56,000-litre vat, a unique folk amusement. 15 km along the B14 next to the Danube, 20-30 min.
