About this route
Route overview
The Wachau is a 36 km stretch of the Danube valley between Melk and Krems inscribed in 2000 on the UNESCO list as the Wachau Cultural Landscape — a cultural landscape shaped by 2000 years of continuous coexistence of viticulture, monasteries and trading towns along the river. Krems an der Donau — the second town of Lower Austria after St. Pölten, with town rights since 995, a historic Old Town with the Steiner Tor (1480, a Gothic gate), Pfarrkirche St. Veit (Gothic-Baroque), Domäne Wachau (a 30 ha vineyard in the heart of the town — Grüner Veltliner and Riesling) and the Kunstmeile Krems (contemporary art galleries). Dürnstein — the most photographed town of the Wachau, the castle ruins where Richard the Lionheart was held for 11 months in 1192 (the legend of the troubadour Blondel identifying the king by song), the Stiftskirche with its blue Baroque tower (1715-39, one of Austrias icons), and narrow lanes on a steep slope above the Danube. Wachau viticulture — Grüner Veltliner and Riesling classified as Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd (top class), famous vineyards Domäne Wachau, FX Pichler and Emmerich Knoll. Traditional Heuriger (wine taverns) with folk music and regional cuisine. 80 km via the A1 motorway and B3 to Krems, 1 h off-peak. The service runs 24/7.
