About this route
Route overview
Powroznik lies less than 10 km from Krynica-Zdroj, in the Poprad valley, and its Church of Saint James the Younger Apostle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 — as the oldest surviving wooden tserkva in the Beskid Sadecki. The shrine was raised in 1604, three-part of the western-Lemko type with a sacristy added in the 19th century, with a log fir structure, three tented domes, soboty galleries wrapping the body and a post-and-frame bell tower above the babynets. The interior holds an early Baroque iconostasis of 1743-1748, a 1640 wall painting cycle uncovered during 1965 conservation — with a remarkable Last Judgement, Christological scenes and folk ornament — and late Gothic icons of the 16th century preserved in situ. Thanks to its proximity to Krynica-Zdroj, Powroznik is the most visited of the Lemko UNESCO tserkvas. 150 km via the A4 motorway to Tarnow, then DK75 and DK87 through Nowy Sacz to Krynica and a local road to Powroznik — 2 h 15 min off-peak. The service operates 24/7.
