About this route
Route overview
Owczary, formerly Rychwald, is a Lemko village near Gorlice whose Church of the Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrov) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 — as the smallest of the four Lemko UNESCO tserkvas in Lesser Poland and one of the best preserved examples of the three-part western-Lemko type. The shrine was raised in 1653, with three tented domes over the sanctuary, nave and babynets, log fir walls, soboty galleries wrapping the body and characteristic shingle roofs with deep eaves. The interior carries a complete Baroque iconostasis of the 17th-18th centuries with royal doors, an illusionistic wall painting cycle of 1938, a Baroque side altar and icons transferred from another tserkva. Owczary is one of the few Beskid Niski tserkvas where the Greek Catholic liturgy is still celebrated today. 170 km via the A4 motorway to Tarnow, then DK28 to Gorlice and local roads to Owczary — 2 h 30 min off-peak. The service operates 24/7.
