Route overview
A full-day educational visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum — the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp operated in 1940-1945 — with a private chauffeur and a museum-licensed guide. The day is conducted with respect and a restrained tone, recommended from age 14 (museum guidelines), modest and dark clothing advised. Standard plan: 9:00 hotel pickup in Katowice, 10:00 arrival at Auschwitz I (60 km via A4 motorway and national road DK933, about 1 h), 10:15 entry on a reserved slot with a licensed Polish or English-speaking guide (online booking required two weeks in advance), Auschwitz I tour takes about 2.5 h: the "Arbeit macht frei" gate, Blocks 4 and 5 (personal exhibits — hair, suitcases, shoes, eyeglasses of the victims), Block 11 with the Death Cell of St Maximilian Kolbe, the Death Wall, Crematorium I, SS barracks. 13:00 transfer to Birkenau (3 km, 7 min, museum shuttle or your own vehicle), 13:30 visit Auschwitz II-Birkenau (1.5 h): the gate with the watchtower, the selection ramp, the ruins of Crematoria II-V blown up by the SS in 1945, the wooden and brick prisoner barracks, the International Monument to the Victims of Fascism from 1967 with plaques in 22 languages of the victims. 15:00 lunch at a restrained restaurant in Oswiecim outside the museum grounds (recommended: Restauracja Galicja at the Market Square). 16:00 return to Katowice (60 km, 1 h).
