About this route
Route overview
Bytom and Zabrze are two neighbouring cities of the Upper Silesian Metropolis with the best-preserved postindustrial heritage in Poland — the Silesian Underground combo traces 170 years of coal-mining evolution. THE HISTORIC GUIDO MINE in Zabrze, founded in 1855 by Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck, is THE DEEPEST PUBLICLY VISITED MINE IN POLAND — tours at the 320 m underground level (levels 170 m and 320 m), original workings, 19th-20th century mining machines and the Stary Browar underground hotel (the only one of its kind in the world). THE QUEEN LUIZA ADIT in Zabrze, on the UNESCO Tentative List 2023, is the oldest preserved coal adit in Upper Silesia (1791) — a 1100 m boat ride along an underground canal. THE GORNIK ZABRZE STADIUM — home of Gornik Zabrze, 14-time Polish football champion (a record), with a club museum showing the trophies. In Bytom: THE SILESIAN OPERA from 1945 — one of four opera houses in Poland, with a repertoire from Verdi to contemporary Polish productions. The Bytom City Park with a palm house and the Upper Silesian Museum holding a collection of Silesian 19th-20th century art. 25 km via the DK86 road to Bytom and Zabrze, 35 - 50 min off-peak.
