About this route
Route overview
Baden bei Wien is a historic thermal spa 25 km south of Vienna, inscribed in 2021 on the UNESCO list as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe (a cross-border entry of 11 European Belle Époque spas: Bath, Karlsbad, Marienbad, Spa, Baden-Baden, Vichy, Montecatini Terme, Františkovy Lázně, Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen and Baden bei Wien). Baden has 14 hot sulphur springs (35 degrees Celsius, known to the Romans as Aquae 2000 years ago), the favourite resort of Habsburg emperors and Viennese aristocrats since the 16th century — the summer residence of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa, a court retreat. Beethoven spent the summer months of 1804-1825 in Baden treating his deafness and completed the Ninth Symphony at Beethoven-Haus on Rathausgasse (today a museum with original manuscripts of the Ode to Joy). Doblhoffpark — a 75 ha Baroque landscape park (one of Europes largest urban rose gardens with 30,000 rose bushes, season June-October), the Mozart-Tempel and the Schwanenteich. Casino Baden — Austrias oldest working casino (since 1934, the elegant 19th-century Casinosaal ballroom, baccarat, roulette, blackjack, daily concerts of the Pannonisches Casino-Orchester). Römertherme Baden — 6 thermal pools, a 50 m leisure pool, 18 saunas with admission including bathing in an authentic Roman cistern from 200 AD. Beethoven Temperance Days in July — an annual music festival with Ninth Symphony concerts in Baden. 25 km via the A2 motorway to Baden, 30 min. The service runs 24/7. From EUR 220 in a Mercedes E-Class for 1-3 passengers, EUR 280 in a V-Class for 4-6.
