Standard plan: 8:00 hotel pickup in Bratislava, 10:30 arrival in Budapest (200 km via the M1 motorway, about 2 h 30). 3 h tour of the Castle District: Hungarian Parliament (Danube embankment, Neo-Gothic 1885-1902, the third largest parliament in the world, the crowns of Saint Stephen), St Stephen's Basilica (Neo-Renaissance 1851-1905, dome 96 m, reliquary of Saint Stephen's right hand), Buda Castle (the Royal Castle on Castle Hill, UNESCO 1987, today the Hungarian National Gallery and the Szechenyi National Library). 12:30 lunch at Gerbeaud Cafe on Vorosmarty Square (founded 1858, a coffee house with 19th-century interiors, traditional Dobos Torta and Eszterhazy Torta, the favourite cafe of Empress Sisi). 14:30 Fisherman's Bastion (Neo-Romanesque terraced gallery from 1902 above the Danube, 7 towers symbolising the Hungarian tribes, the best view of Parliament from the Pest side) plus Matthias Church (14th-century Gothic with the coronations of Hungarian kings, roof of coloured Zsolnay tiles). 16:00 Szechenyi thermal baths (Europe's largest thermal complex from 1913 in a Neo-Baroque palace, 18 indoor and 3 outdoor pools, water 27-38 C from hot springs 1,000 m beneath the city, bathing with a game of chess in the steamy water). 1 h of bathing with access to the thermal pools. 19:00 return to Bratislava (200 km, about 2 h 30).
