About this route
Route overview
The VIE -> MUC route links the Austrian Airlines hub with the main Lufthansa hub in Germany: 430 km and 4 h 30 min - 5 h of driving. We leave VIE on the A1 through Linz to Salzburg, then the German A8 (Alpine) through Rosenheim into Munich-Erding. MUC is a Star Alliance Lufthansa long-haul hub: daily flights to Chicago, New York JFK, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Incheon, Bangkok, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing and Shanghai. The route is popular for Bavaria-Vienna business travel (BMW, Siemens, Allianz, Munich Re) and for long-haul connections when Lufthansa out of MUC is more flexible than Austrian out of VIE. Bottlenecks are the Alpine A8 in winter (snow, chains) and the A99 ring during 7-9 and 16-19 peak hours (up to 45 min added). The service runs 24/7. We recommend a 3 hour buffer for European departures and 5 hours for long-haul. Mercedes E-Class from EUR 1,500 for 1-3 passengers, V-Class from EUR 1,800 for 4-6.
