The oldest spa resort of Central Europe in one comfortable day with a private chauffeur — Karlovy Vary, founded in 1370 by Charles IV, today home to 12 thermal springs at 30-73 degrees C and classic 19th-century Habsburg architecture. Standard plan: 9:00 hotel pickup in Prague, 10:30 arrival in Karlovy Vary (130 km via D6 motorway and local roads, about 1 h 30). Spa tour 4 h on foot along the riverside colonnades: Mlynska kolonada (the most famous neo-Renaissance colonnade from 1881 by Josef Zitek, architect of Prague National Opera, 5 thermal springs), Vridelni kolonada (a 1975 modernist pavilion over the Vridlo geyser, which every 90 seconds shoots a 12-metre column of water at 73 degrees C — the hottest spring in Karlovy Vary), Trzni kolonada (wooden Swiss-style from 1883), Sadova kolonada (19th century in Dvorakovo Park). A walk along Stara Louka Promenade with the most famous hotels: Grandhotel Pupp (founded 1701, the setting of Casino Royale 2006 with Daniel Craig as Bond — the casino staircase, the hotel colonnade, the Becher restaurant) and Imperial. 12:30 lunch at Grandhotel Pupp restaurant (Czech-Austrian cuisine, dumplings, goulash, Wiener schnitzel). 14:00 visit to the Becherovka Distillery with the spirit museum (since 1807, 13 herbal botanicals, the only producer in the world, tasting of 4 expressions — Original, KV, Lemond, Cordial). 15:30 walk along Pramen Promenade — buy traditional porcelain drinking cups and lazenske oplatky (spa wafer biscuits). 16:30 return to Prague (130 km, about 1 h 30).
