Městský stadion at Závodní 2991/86 in Vítkovice seats 15,123 and is one of the best-known athletics venues in Central Europe. Since 1961 it has hosted the Golden Spike (Zlatá tretra), a meeting that draws world-class athletes together with their teams, agents and media.
Outside the athletics season the venue works as a football stadium and a host for larger events.
The distance from Ostrava-Mošnov Airport is about 22 km and the drive usually takes 25-35 minutes. Vítkovice lies on the southern, airport side of the city, so the run is shorter than to the historic core. On meeting and match days, however, the final stretch along Závodní and Ruská can stretch out of proportion to the distance — athletes, delegations and spectators all arrive within the same window.
