Etymologia

Pochodzenie i znaczenie

Schwartz derives from Old Germanic swart (dark, black), which in Middle High German became swarz and in modern German schwarz. In Yiddish — shvarts (שװאַרץ), phonetically identical. As a pre-surname nickname, Schwartz described dark complexion, dark hair, or association with a dark-coloured location (a dark tenement, a blacksmithing forge with dark smoke).

The form Szwarc is the Polish phonetic adaptation, in which "schw" becomes "szw" in accordance with Polish orthography. Szwarec and Szwarc are synonyms. In everyday Yiddish usage, shvarts was a common intensifying element: "shvarts yor" (black year, a year of misfortunes), "shvarts khasn" (a dark, unattractive groom). The transfer of the word from colloquial register to legal form after 1787 illustrates the contrast between traditional Jewish naming culture and the Habsburg administrative approach to citizen identification.

Gdzie żyli bearers tego nazwiska

Schwartz was one of the most common Jewish surnames in Poland, distributed nearly uniformly across Galicia and the Congress Kingdom. Kraków, Tarnów, Rzeszów, Lublin, Białystok — each of these cities counted hundreds of Schwartz or Szwarc families. A particular concentration is visible in the Białystok region, where the strong Jewish craft and trade tradition included many Szwarc families working in the textile industry.

Kontekst historyczny

Historia bearers

Schwartz was a "democratic" surname in Polish Jewish communities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — borne by families from the upper social strata as well as by the small-town poor. In orthodox and secular environments, in the Bund and among Zionists, Schwartzs participated in every form of Jewish social life. The Holocaust destroyed the overwhelming majority of this population. An estimated 3,000–4,000 of 32,000 bearers survived.
