Margalit (מַרְגָּלִית) is the Hebrew word for pearl, borrowed from Greek margarites. In the Talmud and rabbinic literature the pearl is regularly used as a metaphor for precious knowledge, rare learning, and invaluable teaching. A teacher who transmits knowledge to a student "gives him a pearl"; a Talmudic tractate describes certain interpretations as "pearls of Torah".

Spelling differences — Margulies, Margolis, Margules, Margulis — reflect transliterations from the Hebrew or Aramaic original through European languages. Margolis is the most Western European (Latinised) form; Margulies is typical of Central European Ashkenazi Jews; Margulis is the Eastern Galician and Ukrainian form; Margaliot is the transliteration closest to the Hebrew original.

The Margaliot dynasty — a line of rabbis and scholars from Eastern Galicia — was one of the intellectual pillars of that community from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. Rabbi Reuven Margaliot (1889–1971) of Lwów was the author of fundamental works on Jewish angelology, Kabbalah, and halakha.

Margulies was particularly common in Eastern Galicia and Volhynia — regions that concentrated the great Talmudic academies and scholarly communities. Brody, Lwów, Stanisławów, and Kołomyja are cities where Margulies families played a central role in Jewish communal life. In the Congress Kingdom the form Margolis was found in Lublin and Warsaw.

Margulies as a rabbinic surname commanded exceptional respect. In the scholarly circles of Eastern Galicia, bearers of this name were frequently directly or indirectly connected to rabbinic dynasties that for generations had supplied spiritual leaders to local communities. The Holocaust destroyed most of these communities. An estimated 1,200–1,500 of 15,000 bearers survived.
