Tykocin & Treblinka — Private Day Trip from Warsaw

Two places of fundamental importance to the history of Polish Jews — the preserved Baroque synagogue in Tykocin, a witness to centuries of religious life, and the Treblinka memorial, where more than 800,000 people were murdered between 1942 and 1943. A journey led with care, and with respect for every site visited.

About the trip

What you will experience

Tykocin is one of the few places in Poland where time seems to have paused. The Baroque synagogue built in 1642 survived the Second World War — the Germans used it as a warehouse — and to this day preserves its polychrome walls inscribed with passages from the Talmud and Torah, along with original religious furnishings. In August 1941, German forces murdered approximately 1,700 to 2,000 Jewish residents of the town in the nearby Łopuchowo forest — almost the entire community. Only a few dozen people survived, saved by their Polish neighbours.\n\nTreblinka II was one of four camps of Aktion Reinhardt — the secret operation to physically exterminate the Jews of the General Government. Over fifteen months, from July 1942 to November 1943, more than 800,000 people were murdered here, predominantly Jews from Poland and Western Europe. The Germans dismantled the camp before the war ended. In its place, between 1958 and 1964, a memorial was designed by Adam Haupt and Franciszek Duszeńko — a field of 17,000 symbolic stones set into the earth, each marking a different town from which victims were deported.\n\nThis trip allows you to visit both sites in a single day, combining reflection on the life of former Jewish communities with confrontation with the scale of the Holocaust. The entire route is conducted privately in a Mercedes V-Class — no group coaches, no rush.

Programme

Daily plan

Departure from central Warsaw takes place early in the morning, to arrive in Tykocin before the main flow of visitors. The drive through the Podlasie region covers approximately 150 kilometres through the lowlands and forests of eastern Poland.\n\nIn Tykocin, the programme includes a visit to the synagogue: its three-nave interior, richly painted walls bearing quotations from the Talmud and Torah, the grand aron ha-kodesh — the Torah ark — and the museum documenting the life of the town's Jewish community. Adjacent to the synagogue are the former rabbi's kitchen and school building, together forming a preserved ensemble of religious institutions. The visit also includes the old Jewish cemetery on the edge of town.\n\nAfter Tykocin, the trip continues south through the Mazovian and Podlasian forests to Treblinka. At the memorial, time is given to walk quietly among the commemorative stones, to read the history of the site, and to pause in silence. The symbolism of the memorial — each stone bearing the name of a town, the central obelisk inscribed "Never Again" — provides a framework for personal reflection.\n\nThe return to Warsaw follows the route through Małkinia, with an optional stop for coffee or a meal along the way, in keeping with the nature of the day.

FAQ

Pytania o wycieczkę

Is a visit to Treblinka appropriate for children?

Treblinka carries a deeply difficult historical weight. The decision rests with parents — we are happy to describe the nature of the memorial in detail to help you decide. With younger children, a shorter programme focused on Tykocin alone is a reasonable alternative.

Can the order of sites be changed?

Yes. We do not impose a fixed itinerary — if you prefer to begin at Treblinka and close the day at the quieter setting of Tykocin, we can arrange accordingly.

How early should we depart from Warsaw?

The optimal departure time is between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning, to allow unhurried visits to both sites and a return before dark. The exact time is agreed at the point of booking.

Is the trip available year-round?

Yes, we operate it throughout the year. In winter, it is worth allowing a little extra time for the road conditions around Małkinia.
