Sandomierz — Private Jewish Shtetl Tour from Kraków

Sandomierz — one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Poland — was home for centuries to a significant Jewish community. The Old Synagogue, the Jewish cemetery, and the Jewish fabric of the Old Town tell the story of a shtetl that survived centuries and disappeared between 1942 and 1943. A private Mercedes V-Class from Kraków, time for unhurried exploration, and return the same day.

About the trip

What you will experience

Sandomierz, set on a hill above the Vistula river approximately 140 kilometres east of Kraków, is among Poland's oldest towns — its origins date to the 10th century. For several centuries the town was an important trading centre, and its Jewish community is documented from at least the 14th century. The Old Synagogue in Sandomierz, built in the 17th century and rebuilt several times, survived the Second World War and now functions as a museum of Jewish culture of the Sandomierz region. The Jewish cemetery, founded probably in the 16th century, preserves matzevot spanning several centuries — many of them remarkable examples of regional stone-carving. The tour includes a walk through the Old Town with particular attention to the former Jewish quarter, visits to the synagogue and cemetery, and time for independent exploration of the cobbled streets and the view over the Vistula. Sandomierz is a town that rewards a slow pace — which is why the tour allows nine hours, with several hours on the ground.
