Prague Josefov & Terezín — Private Day Trip from Prague

Josefov is one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Central Europe — six synagogues, an ancient cemetery and the Pinkas Memorial, whose walls bear the hand-written names of 78,000 Czech Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Terezín is a place the Germans designed as a propaganda illusion — and which became a gateway to annihilation.

About the trip

What you will experience

Josefov — the former Jewish quarter of Prague — is one of the few places in Europe where six synagogues and an old Jewish cemetery can be seen within a single quarter, in the heart of a major city. The oldest of them, the Old-New Synagogue, dates from around 1270 and is among the oldest surviving synagogues in Europe. The Pinkas Synagogue, built in the 16th century, houses one of the most affecting Holocaust memorials in the world: 78,000 names, surnames and dates of birth of Czech Jews murdered during the Second World War, written by hand on its walls. The Old Jewish Cemetery, active from the 15th to the 18th century, holds over 12,000 tombstones arranged in multiple layers — the number buried there is estimated in the tens of thousands.\n\nTerezín (Theresienstadt) was a fortress town transformed by the Germans into a concentration camp and transit ghetto in 1941. Approximately 140,000 people passed through it — Jews from Bohemia, Moravia, Germany and Austria — of whom around 80,000 died directly or following deportation to Auschwitz and other camps. The Germans deliberately shaped Terezín into a propaganda showpiece: in 1944 they permitted an International Red Cross visit, constructing an elaborate illusion of normal life specifically for the occasion. Artists, composers and poets created work in Terezín — their output survived and is preserved today in the Ghetto Museum.\n\nThe day combines the centuries-long history of Jewish Josefov with a direct confrontation with the mechanism of the Holocaust at Terezín.

Programme

Daily plan

The trip begins in central Prague early in the morning. Josefov lies within walking distance of the Old Town Square — the programme in the quarter takes approximately two and a half to three hours and covers: the Old-New Synagogue (exterior and interior), the Pinkas Synagogue with the Memorial, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Maisel Synagogue, the Klaus Synagogue, the High Synagogue and the Spanish Synagogue. The order of visits is adjusted to opening hours and visitor levels on the day. A coffee break between sites — the quarter has several quiet cafés.\n\nAround midday, the trip departs by Mercedes V-Class towards Terezín — approximately 60 kilometres north-west of Prague, about 60 to 70 minutes by road. At Terezín, the programme includes: the Ghetto Museum (exhibition covering the history of the camp, the artistic output of prisoners and the propaganda Red Cross visit) and the Small Fortress — the former Gestapo prison and labour camp, with preserved cells, the roll-call ground and the gate bearing the inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei". Time at Terezín — approximately two hours.\n\nReturn to central Prague in the late afternoon.

FAQ

Pytania o wycieczkę

How long does the Josefov visit take?

A comprehensive visit covering all six synagogues, the Old Cemetery and the Pinkas Memorial takes approximately two and a half to three hours. If you prefer a focused visit to selected sites, it can be completed in around 90 minutes.

What is the difference between the Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum at Terezín?

The Ghetto Museum documents the history of the Jewish prisoners in the ghetto — their daily life, artistic output and eventual deportation. The Small Fortress was the Gestapo prison, where political prisoners, partisans and POWs were held — a different category of prisoner, a different history, the same town.

Is the Josefov combination ticket expensive?

The combination ticket (synagogues and cemetery) is among the more costly attractions in Prague — it is a private ticket, maintained by the Jewish Museum in Prague. We provide assistance with booking and current pricing details when you make a reservation.

Is the trip available year-round?

Yes, throughout the year. Josefov and Terezín have different seasonal opening hours — we factor these in when planning the schedule.
