Łódź Ghetto & Chełmno — Private Day Trip from Warsaw

About the trip

What you will experience

The Litzmannstadt Ghetto in Łódź was the second largest ghetto in occupied Poland, after Warsaw. Sealed in 1940, it held at its peak over 230,000 inhabitants within just four square kilometres. The Jewish Council (Judenrat) was headed by Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski — a historically contested figure who attempted to preserve the ghetto through labour for the Germans, while also presiding over deportation selections. The ghetto outlasted all others in Poland, and was not liquidated until the summer of 1944.\n\nRadegast Station (today part of the Museum of the History of Independence) is the preserved railway station from which more than 145,000 Jews of the Łódź ghetto were deported to Chełmno and Auschwitz-Birkenau between 1942 and 1944. A memorial to the deportations, an original freight wagon and a permanent historical exhibition make it one of the most significant Holocaust memorial sites in Poland.\n\nChełmno nad Nerem (Kulmhof) was the first site where the Germans employed mass killing by gas — using sealed vans — as part of the Holocaust, from December 1941. An estimated 150,000 to 180,000 Jews and Roma were murdered here, predominantly from the Łódź ghetto. The camp grounds, the Rzuchów forest and surviving structural remains form part of the Martyrological Museum at Chełmno nad Nerem.\n\nThis trip combines Łódź and Chełmno in a single day, offering a full account of the Łódź tragedy.

Programme

Daily plan

Departure from Warsaw takes place early in the morning via the A2 motorway towards Łódź — the journey takes approximately 90 minutes. The first stop is Radegast Station in northern Łódź: the original station building, a freight wagon on the tracks, symbolic columns bearing the names of the deported, and the wagon of death at the centre of the exhibition. Time at Radegast Station — up to 60 minutes.\n\nThe route then leads through the former ghetto: Łagiewnicka Street with preserved fragments of the ghetto wall, the former "Aryan" bridge over the ghetto on Chłodna Street, and the Jewish cemetery on Bracka Street — one of the largest in Europe, containing the graves of Rumkowski. Manufaktura — the complex of former Izrael Poznański textile mills — now houses, among other things, the Museum of Łódź, with an exhibition dedicated to the city's industry and Jewish culture. A lunch break at Manufaktura or a nearby restaurant.\n\nIn the afternoon, the trip heads north towards Chełmno nad Nerem (approximately 60 kilometres from Łódź). At the museum: an exhibition on the history of the camp, the remains of the camp structures and the Rzuchów forest — the site of mass murder and the burial of victims. Time at Chełmno — 60 to 90 minutes. The return to Warsaw follows the S8 expressway.

FAQ

Pytania o wycieczkę

What is the difference between Radegast Station and the Chełmno Museum?

Radegast Station documents the deportations — it is the place from which people were taken. Chełmno is where they were murdered. The two complement each other to give a full picture of the Łódź tragedy.

Is Manufaktura worth visiting as part of this trip?

Yes — the former Poznański mills are directly connected to the history of Jewish Łódź, and the Museum of Łódź exhibition documents that history. The time spent at Manufaktura depends on the group's interests.

Can we skip Chełmno and focus only on Łódź?

Yes. The programme is flexible — if you prefer to spend more time in Łódź (Radegast Station, the ghetto, the cemetery), we can reduce or omit the detour to Chełmno.

Is this trip suitable for people researching family history in Łódź?

Yes — Łódź has well-documented archives and genealogical resources. Please tell us about your genealogical purpose before the trip and we will help plan a visit to the relevant archive or memorial institution.
