Kazimierz — Private Jewish Quarter Tour in Kraków

Kazimierz was for centuries the heart of Jewish life in Lesser Poland. Four hours are sufficient to walk through the principal synagogues, the Remuh cemetery with its 16th-century matzevot, and the Galicia Jewish Museum with its photographic documentation — led by a licensed guide, privately, without the pressure of larger groups.

About the trip

What you will experience

Kazimierz — a formerly separate town incorporated into Kraków in 1800 — has preserved its historic street plan and seven synagogues from earlier centuries. The district was inhabited by a Jewish community from the 14th century and remained for hundreds of years a centre of Jewish culture, trade, and learning in southern Poland. By the outbreak of the Second World War, more than 60,000 Kraków Jews lived there. The half-day tour covers four key sites: the Old Synagogue on Szeroka Street — the oldest surviving synagogue in Poland, today a museum of Judaica; the Remuh Synagogue and adjacent Remuh Cemetery with its Renaissance matzevot from the 16th century; the Galicia Jewish Museum on Dajwór Street — a gallery of photography documenting Jewish traces across Galicia and the fate of its communities in the 20th century; and the New Square (Plac Nowy) with its former ritual building, for decades the commercial heart of the district. The walk is guided by a licensed city guide. The Mercedes V-Class collects and drops off the group — Kazimierz is in the centre of Kraków, a few minutes from most hotels.

Programme

Daily plan

The Mercedes V-Class collects the group from the hotel at 09:00 and reaches Szeroka Street within a few minutes. At 09:15 the visit begins: the Old Synagogue — 45 minutes with the permanent Judaica exhibition, a scale model of pre-1939 Kraków, and archival documents. At 10:00, stepping onto Szeroka Street and walking to the Remuh Synagogue — 30 minutes inside the synagogue and 20 minutes in the Remuh Cemetery, with its 16th-century matzevot and the gravestones placed against the wall during the Second World War. At 10:50 the walk continues through the former quarter: Józefa Street, Estery Street, Plac Nowy, with the guide providing the district's historical context — 30 minutes. At 11:20 entry to the Galicia Jewish Museum (18 Dajwór Street) — photographs documenting Jewish Galicia, the "Remnants of Memory" exhibition, and thematic galleries — 45–50 minutes. At 12:10 return to Szeroka Street or a collection point agreed with the group. The Mercedes V-Class returns to the hotel — arrival at approximately 12:30.

FAQ

Pytania o wycieczkę

Is Kazimierz still a living neighbourhood?

Yes — Kazimierz is a living, active part of Kraków with restaurants, galleries, and cafés. At the same time it preserves its historic character and is a centre of Jewish memory in Poland.

Can we stay in Kazimierz after the tour?

Of course — the Mercedes V-Class can leave the group in Kazimierz at the end of the tour rather than returning to the hotel. Please indicate your preference.

Is this tour available every day?

Yes — with the exception of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, when synagogues may be closed. We verify opening hours before each visit.

Can the programme be extended to include Płaszów or Schindler's Factory?

Yes — a 7-hour version covers Kazimierz, Płaszów, and Schindler's Factory. Please enquire about the full programme.
