Private Wieliczka Salt Mine Tour from Krakow

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is just 15 km south-east of Krakow city centre. The drive by private car takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic. It is one of the closest major tourist attractions to Krakow — perfect for a half-day visit.

The entire excursion including hotel pickup and return takes approximately 5 hours. The drive is ~30 minutes each way, and the underground tour lasts 2–3 hours. Including an optional lunch in Wieliczka, you are back at your hotel by early afternoon.

You can reach the Wieliczka Salt Mine in several ways: by private car with driver (~30 min, door-to-door), by city bus 304 (~40 min from the centre), or by train from the main station (~25 min). The price consists of a base vehicle fee (5-hour Mercedes round trip with driver) plus a per-person fee (entry ticket with guide). For example: Mercedes E-Class for 2 guests is approximately 381 EUR total, V-Class for 4 guests around 507 EUR total. The larger the group, the lower the per-person cost. The mine is open daily. April to October: 7:30–19:30. November to March: 8:00–17:00. Last entry on the Tourist Route is approximately 2 hours before closing. In peak season we recommend early morning visits — fewer crowds and a more enjoyable experience.

Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles (stone steps, damp corridors), water (we also provide it in the vehicle) and a smartphone for photos. You do not need a tripod — the chamber lighting is spectacular.

Yes, the mine is a fascinating experience for children — the underground lake, salt sculptures, over 700 years of history. There is no official minimum age, but we recommend at least 4 years old due to the ~380 steps down at the start of the route. Older children are usually thrilled by St. Kinga's Chapel and the illuminated underground lake.

St. Kinga's Chapel is the greatest attraction of the Wieliczka Salt Mine — an underground cathedral carved entirely from salt at a depth of 101 metres. Everything inside is made of salt: the chandeliers, the altar, the sculptures, the bas-reliefs inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, even the floor. The chamber is 54 metres long, 17 metres wide and 12 metres high. It is one of the most extraordinary underground spaces in the world.

The underground temperature is a constant 14–16°C all year round — whether it is a scorching summer or freezing winter on the surface. We recommend bringing a warm jacket or jumper, even in summer. The humidity is moderate and the mineral-rich air is considered therapeutic — the mine even has an underground sanatorium for respiratory conditions.

The Tourist Route begins with ~380 steps down, making it inaccessible for wheelchair users. An elevator is available at the end of the route. Yes, photography is allowed throughout the tourist route. Tripods and flash photography are prohibited in St. Kinga's Chapel (to protect the salt sculptures and chandeliers). A smartphone or camera without flash is perfectly sufficient — the chamber lighting is designed to look spectacular in photographs.

The Tourist Route is the main visiting trail — 3.5 km of corridors, St. Kinga's Chapel, the underground lake, salt sculptures and chandeliers. It takes 2–3 hours. The Mining Route is an interactive alternative — you explore in a hard hat with a headlamp, navigate narrower corridors and participate in simulated mining tasks. Both routes are fascinating, but the Tourist Route is by far the more popular and visually rich.

We do not recommend it. Both sites deserve your full attention and are completely different in character — Wieliczka is wonder and fascination, Auschwitz demands reflection and solemnity. Combining them in one day means rushing and emotional exhaustion. We are happy to organise both as separate, full-value excursions on different days.
