There is no one answer for everyone
If western Malopolska is the target, both airports can make sense. The problem begins when the choice is made from the map alone. In practice you need to answer four questions: whether Krakow is part of the stay, what your landing time looks like, whether children or larger luggage are involved and whether you want to close the whole transfer straight after arrival.
When KRK usually wins
When Krakow is part of the trip, when you want to combine western Malopolska with Wieliczka or a city stay, or when the flight into KRK gives you a cleaner, less risky day structure. KRK is also the natural choice when you want a simple model: airport, Krakow hotel first, and only then the onward regional move.
When KTW has the advantage
Most often when you do not plan to stay in Krakow and want to go directly to Oswiecim, Zator or the western side of the region. In that structure KTW can reduce unnecessary backtracking through Krakow and shorten the overall landing-to-hotel segment.
The biggest mistake: choosing the airport for the ticket, not for the full logistics
A cheaper or apparently more convenient flight stops looking attractive once it creates a longer ground leg, extra transfers, tired children and an unclear late arrival into the hotel. In western Malopolska the order of the final part of the day often matters more than the airfare itself.
How to assess it in practical terms
- Going straight to Oswiecim or Zator without sleeping in Krakow? KTW often deserves a serious look.
- Is Krakow part of the stay? KRK usually arranges the day better.
- Travelling with family, children or bigger luggage? Then simplicity from the airport to the hotel matters most.
- Landing late? In that case the calmer final transfer often matters more than the map.
Which structures usually work best
- KTW → Oswiecim / Zator when western Malopolska is the only or main destination.
- KRK → Krakow → western Malopolska when you want to combine the region with a city stay.
- KRK → Oswiecim / Zator when the KRK flight gives a better day rhythm even if the ground leg is longer.

Summary
The better airport for western Malopolska is not always the one that seems “more direct” on paper, but the one that gives a calmer end-to-end day. If you want to calculate that against a real address, family setup or landing time, go to booking or contact us with your travel outline.
