Krakow Balice Airport Transfer — A Complete Guide

John Paul II Airport in Krakow is Poland's second busiest. Here is how to plan a smooth ride into the city.

Balice Airport — gateway to Lesser Poland

John Paul II Airport in Krakow-Balice handles over 9 million passengers per year and sits 11 km west of the Main Market Square. Under ideal conditions the drive takes twenty minutes. During tourist season or rush hour, double that.

Krakow draws visitors from every corner of the globe: tourists, conference delegates, corporate groups. Regardless of the reason for your trip, the first impression starts the moment you step off the plane and look for your ride.

Transport options from Balice

Train (Koleje Małopolskie)

Kraków Airport station is adjacent to the terminal. Trains reach the Main Station (Kraków Główny) in about 17 minutes for a fare of a few zlotys. Fast, but limited: services run every 30 minutes, stop entirely at night, and get very crowded during peak hours when you have bulky luggage.

Bus 208 and 252

City buses connect the airport with various parts of Krakow. Cheap, but slower than the train and often full in summer. There is no dedicated luggage compartment.

Taxi

Licensed taxis queue outside the terminal. A ride to the city centre costs roughly PLN 80-100 during the day, more at night and on weekends. Quality and attitude vary from driver to driver.

Private chauffeur transfer

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, helps with luggage and takes you directly to your address. The price is locked in at the time of booking and does not change regardless of route, time of day or traffic conditions.

"Krakow is a city worth seeing from minute one. A private transfer lets you take in the views instead of wrestling with logistics." — Marek, one of our drivers with eight years of experience

Popular routes from Balice Airport

  • Main Market Square / Old Town — 20-35 min
  • Kazimierz — 25-40 min
  • Nowa Huta — 30-45 min
  • Zakopane — approx. 1 h 40 min via Zakopianka road
  • Oświęcim (Auschwitz) — approx. 1 h 10 min
  • Wieliczka Salt Mine — approx. 35-50 min

Our drivers know Krakow and the surrounding region inside out. Planning a day trip to Zakopane or Wieliczka straight from the airport? We will suggest the best route.

More and more arrivals at KRK continue straight beyond Krakow itself. If that is your plan, see our destination pages for Wieliczka, Oswiecim, Zator / Energylandia and Ojcow. We also prepared dedicated route pages for Krakow to Zator and Krakow to Ojcow National Park.

Choosing the right option

The decision between the train and a private transfer depends on a few things:

  1. Group size — a couple with carry-on bags will do fine on the train; a family of five with suitcases will appreciate the space of a van.
  2. Arrival time — a flight landing at 11:30 p.m. rules out the train. A private transfer runs around the clock.
  3. Destination — the train drops you at the Main Station, from where you still need to walk or catch a tram. A transfer delivers you door to door.
  4. Budget — the train wins on the unit fare, but a private transfer for 3-4 people costs little more than a taxi while offering a better experience.

What our Balice transfer looks like

When you land and turn on your phone you will find an SMS from us with the driver's name and licence plate. In the arrivals hall, the driver is waiting with a name board. He carries your bags to the car parked close to the terminal. Inside you will find bottled water and a phone charger. On the way, the driver is happy to recommend restaurants or sights.

Our fleet consists of premium vehicles: Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series and spacious vans for larger parties. Every car is regularly serviced and kept immaculate.

Booking

Reserve your transfer on our booking page. Enter the date, landing time, flight number and destination address. The system shows the price instantly with no hidden fees. Prefer to talk? Contact us by phone or email.

The bottom line

Getting from Balice does not have to involve guesswork. A private transfer removes the variables: queues, timetables, lack of luggage space. You book once, and everything else happens automatically. Check our offer and see that comfort does not have to cost a fortune.

If you plan to explore the city after landing, have a look at our Krakow with a private chauffeur guide for ready-made itineraries and insider tips. And if you are still comparing providers, our breakdown of the 7 criteria that actually matter when choosing a transfer company is a good place to start.

If KRK is only the start of the day, our dedicated guides for KRK to Oswiecim / Auschwitz, KRK to Energylandia / Zator and Krakow to Ojcow will usually be the most practical next read.

For wider trip planning after arrival, the most useful follow-ups are often Krakow to Wieliczka, KRK to Bialka or Bukowina, KRK to Krynica or Szczawnica and our comparison of KRK vs KTW for western Malopolska.

If the plan after landing is calmer or more business-led, the most useful next reads are usually KRK to Rabka-Zdroj, Lanckorona or Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and KRK to Niepolomice.

For the next regional stage, the most useful additions are usually Wadowice + Kalwaria, Krakow to Bochnia and KRK to Muszyna or Piwniczna-Zdroj.

If you are comparing similar scenarios or want to merge nearby directions into one sensible day, also see Wieliczka and Niepolomice, our comparison Wieliczka or Bochnia, and the family-focused guide Rabka or Bialka Tatrzanska. If the decision is more specific, the most useful follow-ups are usually Krakow + Wieliczka + Ojcow in one day, late arrival at KRK: stay in Krakow or continue straight on, Energylandia: day trip or stay near Zator and Niepolomice for a business guest.
